LUNASEA THEATRE PRESENTS A STAGED READING OF LISA COCHRANE’S NEW PLAY "WELLHEELED", NOVEMBER 4-5 AT THE WAITING ROOM IN HALIFAX

LunaSea? Theatre is proud to present the first play by Nova Scotia writer Lisa Cochrane. Although Cochrane’s professional background is in contemporary dance, documentary filmmaking and found object sculpture, when introduced to Cochrane’s fiction writing, co-artistic directors Martha Irving and Mary-Colin Chisholm saw the potential for a new work of theatre.

The germ of the play is the relationship between doc filmmaker Cochrane and an enigmatic, aging cross dresser very familiar to citizens of Halifax, Harold Anderson. After her documentary on Mr. Anderson Do Shoes Make the Man? failed to materialize over a decade ago, Cochrane’s lasting impressions of their encounter - and an earlier dramatic event in her life - eventually became fodder for an evolving work of fiction. Thus inspired, Cochrane was invited to participate in a new mentorship program for female playwrights at LunaSea? called The Furnace. After more than a year of dramaturgical development with Mary Colin Chisholm and Martha Irving, sea- soned actors Robbie O’Neill and Kim Parkhill now join director Martha Irving in bringing life to the Well Heeled script, in a staged reading at The Waiting Room in North End Halifax.

WELL HEELED SYNOPSIS It’s summer 1999. Halifax. Cross-dressing night security guard Arnold Halverston thinks he’s finally found the wife he’s been looking for since Expo ’67. Kirsten Blackie is hoping Arnold will be a subject for her documentary series idea “Oddballs”. Two strangers at cross-purposes enter a studio for a pre-interview chat, resulting in a darkly comic tale of attraction and repulsion, grief and unexpected intimacy.
