- Any version of I Will Survive of course. I think every human should memorize the lyrics of this at age 12; the teen suicide rate would plummet. My favourite version is the Cake one ("I should have changed my fuckin' lock" is blanked out in this)

- Jlynn2 writes: Beth Neilson Chapman's song Avalanche (here's the lyrics) has always struck me as powerful breakup song. The lines... I wasn't ready for the words you chose When you said goodbye Or just how suddenly the roads could close Between your life and mine... never fail to strike a deep chord within.
- >>> Goodbye To You by Scandal <<<
- "Best I Ever Had" by Vertical Horizon ... it goes in stages where your lover left you and you feel like you've lost who you thought was your soul mate. After love no longer blinds you, you actually see the person for who they are and therefore you no longer want them into your life. But, you don't regret ever being with that person as you remember the good times and discovered yourself what you really want as well.
- "You Learn" and "Hand In My Pocket" by Alanis Morrissette
- "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart" BeeGees?
- "I'm Not In Love" 10CCs
- "Big Girls Don't Cry" Fergie
- I really like "Don't Need You" by Bikini Kill, for when I'm in that angry, fuck you phase and celebrating my freedom.
- For the sad, bittersweet days pretty much anything by the Magnetic Fields is great, especially "Come Back from San Francisco" and "Sunset City."
- "Still in Love" by Cat Power is one I've always wanted to put on a post-breakup mix tape for my ex but the opportunity has not arisen yet.
