After many years of lobbying, this is where sexual orientation was added to the Nova Scotia Human Rights Act in 1989. Domestic partnership registration (including same-sex couples) became available in 2001. The Supreme Court of Nova Scotia ruled in 2004 that same-sex marriage would be legal.
