3 to 4:30 p.m.
Screening of "The Lavender Scare" Documentary for Pride Month at Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21 (1055 Marginal Road)
Lavender Scare tackles the timely issues of inclusion and diversity in the workplace. It speaks to the value of vigilance and social action
In honor of Pride Month, this event is co-hosted by the U.S. Consulate General in Halifax and the Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21.
“The Lavender Scare” chronicles the period starting in the 1950s when U.S. federal law enforcement agents, with the cooperation of employing agencies, interrogated and harassed thousands of gay and lesbian federal employees, forcing them to resign or be fired. The Department of State was among the agencies most severely impacted. It is a story of paranoia, persecution, derailed careers, and damaged lives, but also of courage, achievement, activism, and social change.
This film features footage of courageous individuals like Frank Kameny, who was removed from his position in the U.S. Civil Service Commission and was the first U.S. Government employee to appeal his firing in court. His willingness to fight back helped ignite the gay rights movement in the United States. The film also contains interviews with State Department personnel who were fired or resigned. The film is 77-minutes.
