From their website in 2011
Built as one of the most expensive and extravagant homes in the city by Edward W. Chipman and his wife, Mahala Jane Northup in 1866. In 1876 it was converted into a hotel by spinster sisters Sarah and Jane Romans. OscarWilde stayed at the hotel when in Halifax in 18821, and up until 2020, guests could book his room, still decorated in high Victorian style. It's located at 1266 Barrington Street (on the block between Morris and South Streets.)
The Waverley Inn closed in 2020. There were discussions of the Inn being replaced or supplemented by a new boutique hotel development. The new development would have been behind the original building. The facade of the original building was being restored to original colour and design but it was unclear what role it would play in this new hotel.2
At some time, those redevelopment plans ended. Instead, in 2024, the Inn re-opened as a supportive housing facility for women and gender-diverse people.3 The YWCA Halifax operates the site with beds for 32 residents.
