History

On February 11th, 1974, Richard North and Chris Vogel were married by a Unitarian-Universalist minister in Winnipeg using the ancient tradition of banns. Marriage banns are a Christian traditon in which the names of the couple and their intention to marry are read for three successive Sundays before the wedding. The reading of the banns negates a couple's need for a marriage license, but jurisdictions may refuse to register the marriage.

Commentary

Since married folks almost never have intramarital sex anyway, the idea of marriage between two very close people isn't exactly unheard of. Bert and Ernie have never bopped, but they got married in one sesame street episode, because they were friends for life, right?

Disabled people and their friend who takes care of them could also be included in the same sex marriage laws. GayMarriage, where two lovers commit for life is another good reason to have it.

All you need to do, in Canada, is change the LegalDefinitionOfSpouse?, and suddenly all the hoops you have to jump through for a simmilar legal arrangement become significantly easier.

Our government likes to be picky when LegislatingSex?. Here's a fabulous example.

Currently, because of the LegalDefinitionOfSpouse?, gay people cannot do the following:

• Book the honeymoon suite without odd looks from the staff.
• One of the spouses, if not both, have to adopt the kid. The rights of gay singles or couples to adopt kids has only recently come about.
• If your partner is sick in the hospital you are not allowed to visit. Only family is.
• Both parents need to get legal custody of any children, or visitation rights are revoked.
• Straight couples have fewer problems with, say, having a cross burning on ther lawn.
• (there are many others. If you think of any, add 'em)

Chris says, you're all on crack. Burning cross, hotel rooms? Step away from the crack pipe.

Gay Marriage is a dubious benefit; you get a few things in one package which can all be created legally in other ways.

You also get the benefit of your partner getting half your stuff when you break up.

Hey, don't we need a legally recognized spouse thing to allow homosexuals to have Spousal Privelidge? That is, where you cannot force one spouse to testify against the other in court? That's something you can't easily get without being married.

i dont think gays should care what people should care about what straight people think about them im in the 12 grade at a verry predigust school and i hear rude things all the time and i let it pass and dont let it get to me because i know a gay friend of mine tryed to kill he self because of what people said andi dont think it is right at all dont listen to them

Mike Teal says: The main themes I kept hearing most of the time for gay marriage has centered around issues concerning money and property. Maybe I'm old fashioned but marriage means alot more than this. It is a deep emotional/spiritual/physical bond between two people (straight or gay). I wonder how many people currently in open relationships are going to change thier lifestyles so the marriage is more than just a financial safety net.
