2023 Queer Social Spaces

2023 Queer Social Spaces Study

Summer 2023

From: Sasha Wang, Dalhousie Urban Planning student.

I’m doing an independent study this summer on queer spaces in Halifax. In my project I’m interviewing queer folks to understand where they like to socialize and find community. I’ll be making a pamphlet and interactive map of the spaces we talk about. As well, I’m working with the municipal planning team as they are interested in learning about supporting queer spaces in the city.

I'm building on Jane Rideout's work earlier this year; she defines LGBTQ spaces in HRM but I would like to compare the experiences of queer folks of different backgrounds.

Beyond that I would love to learn about how the LGBTQ community has changed throughout the years.

In my final products, I am creating pamphlets and a map so people in the area can find LGBTQ spaces. Whereas my presentation to the municipality will bring awareness of what the LGBTQ community needs to be supported by government planners.

Sasha produced this map of Q spaces identified in the survey.
