January 2003 (or earlier) Okay, the #Gay_Halifax IrcChannel is a piece of shit, but here's the current situation:
#gay_halifax is a "benevolent dictatorship" of sorts, run by boytoy^ (BoyToy?) and shilo/uprise/enforcer/whatever his name is this week. You get to stick around in the channel if you obey the following rules, and understand the accompanying administrative decisions:
- Redundancy is the enemy. There must never be more than 3 ops in the channel at a given time. Two of these ops must be clones from the same IP address, MAC address, etc.
- Consistency is the enemy. One connection per IP address, regardless of how many computers are on it, how many people are on it, or whatever, with the inevitable exception of 2/3 of the operators.
- Sanity is the enemy. If you try to contest any dictum by the channel operators, and ask them nicely for an explanation, reasoning, or logical argument, expect a tongue lashing, a warning, and then a kick or ban from the channel itself.
- Bears are the enemy. This is NOT a bear channel. Twinks are the superior breed of people, and will be given preferential treatment if the operators feel they are flirty enough.
- English is the enemy. If U tok in reel english, thay wont understand wat U hav 2 say. their is no such thing as homonyms, you have two use the first spelling that cums too ur head.
- War is Peace. You can guarantee stability and order by creating confrontation.
- Freedom is Slavery. By subjigating the masses, they can do whatever they want without danger to themselves.
- Love is Hate. Stab your friends in the back. That's exactly what they're there for.
- Windows is Stable. By using windows in the main support structure for the channel, you can guarantee uptimes in the minutes or maybe even hours!
- #gayHalifax is the enemy. People on both will get banned. Its somehow neccesary to force the issue. Of course, bans will happen arbitrarily anyway, because War is Peace.
#gayHalifax, on the other hand, is free and open and almost anyone who is responsible can have ops. Responsibility is determined according to how closely they follow this channel's rules.
- A responsible person performs a /whois when opping someone, and their auto-op script is based on hostmask, username as well as nickname. SkriptKiddies? have taken over the other channel numerous times in the past because some people forgot to use hostmasks in their auto-op script.
- Freedom of speech, freedom of expression and freedom of preference are all embraced by this channel policy. If someone is gay-baiting and trying to commit acts of HomophobicAbuse? InRealLife?, action may be taken to protect the less clueful members of the channel.
- If you find a particular person totally reprehensible, worthless or otherwise enraging, try /ignore before bugging operators about bans.
- The less an op has to use his magical super-powers, the better. Try to find a peaceful elegant solution that works in the best interests of channel integrity and personal integrity.
- We don't like to force people to decide between two alternatives. The average user of #G_H will not directly attack us, and what does it matter what they're saying or doing in that other channel? Besides, backing people into a corner and forcing the issue might make them leave for spite.
Obviously its up to the public to decide which is better. Being good canadians they'll take it up the ass, both figuratively and literally.
You can't please everyone. See GayCommunity.
Oh, and you might want to take a look over on NastyPeople? to see if there's any new news on 'em.
