Paul and Grant MacNeil were partners for many years. Grant was a teacher who contracted HIV and was blind for the last two years of his life; Paul was also HIV+. After Grant died, Paul was left with no benefits. Paul and WilsonHodder had applied for spousal pensions and were denied. Eventually it went to court and they won, and they were the first people to receive samesex CPP benefits. The painting was done from a photograph by a friend of his, Nancy Unsworth. The painting was done in 2007-2008, the photo was taken circa 1996.
