Jack Murphy

B. ca. 1938

Bio for the H•R•E1

As of November, 2024, Jack Murphy lives in Meteghan.

He lived the majority of his life in New Jersey, with his dear companion Dr MartenHazen?. Jack was a school teacher. The couple would often visit his family in Meteghan and surrounding area. Their arrival was often noted in the french news paper Le Petit Courrier. The same paper would also post updates about any postcards or letters received in Clare, from Jack, as well as reporting on several cruises they took together, as if it was perfectly normal to do so.

Both were already retired when his first life partner died of cancer. Jack then moved to Nova Scotia again to care for his elderly mother.

He met DanielPoirier?, who became his second life partner of 17 years. They married were excommunicated from the Catholic church, an event that made national headlines in Canada. Jack and Dan were often in plays, and were often seen together at LGBT events in the area sporting their custom made rainbow vests. Poirier was also retired and elderly and died of cancer in Jack's arms, around 2009.

Today, Jack is "in love again", and says cheerfully that this time he "went for a young one" of only 78 years old!

Jack's story appears in the musical "Y'a Une Etoile" as a segment, and appears again in the opening of the short documentary "Daniel le Tisserand". The latter is actually about Daniel's identity a weaver, but Jack appears at the beginning where you can see several shots of myself asking Jack about his own story. Both are by Julien Cadieux and Bellefeuille Productions. Y'a Une Etoile is viewable online, free, here. The Meteghan segment is around the 44 minutes mark in the movie.
