HANKY CODES
We have tried to garner as many sources as
possible for the following codes. Although we have heard of differences
between the colors and their associated meaning from country to country, we
have not yet found any differences. Generally speaking, anything worn on the
left means the wearer is a Top for the activity, on the right means Bottom.
There is nothing to stop you from wearing any combination of colors and
sides, if you’re into many activities. (Novices to the SM scene should note
that there is no rule that requires you to use the hanky codes. Using them,
however, can sometimes make meeting someone with similar interests that bit
easier. The last four items should be taken in the fun with which they were
intended.) While use of the codes seems to be more prevalent in the
homosexual community, we have seen evidence of it in the heterosexual
community, also.
There is one code that has been omitted
from the main list. It is the zip-lock bag (left has drugs, right looking for
drugs). Given that drugs can easily impair your ability to assess risk, we’d
recommend that you stay clear of anyone sporting a zip-lock bag, whichever
side it’s worn.
