GarlandBrooks?, Don's partner until his death, says, “There's a double entry here. The painting is of one openly gay professional men, by another: flamboyant designer and costume design professor RobertDoyle, who was also an accomplished painter. There are two kinds of people [who help our community], you can be an activist, or you can just be openly gay and not hide and set an example. Both Don and Robert were modelling what we're doing now.”

The painting was made from a photograph taken the year before Donald died, while on a sailboat in St Lucia. His friend Bob Doyle got a copy of that picture, and created the portrait a year later.

This painting is in the RainbowSeniorsArchive.
