Dr Laura Schlessinger
(Also see: DearDrLaura, a funny rebuttal of her Bible-based objections to homosexuality.)
In 2000, Ian was one of four complainants to the Canadian Broadcast Standards Council (CBSC) which saw homophobic broadcaster Dr. Laura removed from Canadian airwaves.
- On May 11, 2000: the CBSC said Schlessinger, known as Dr. Laura, violated the human rights provision of the Canadian Association of Broadcasters' code of ethics.
- Here is a chunk of audio from CJCH's Rick Howe Show (WMA file, 32 minutes, recording courtesy of DouglasFevens) the day after the decision. An interview with Ian had aired earlier; this segment is responses to it.
- 00:48 A male caller (correctly) asserting that Ian was very angry.
- 11:00 Rick reading a letter from an organization called "The Civilized Majority" to the SBSC condemning the "attack on Laura Schlessenger" and condemning their decision.
- 15:20 "Jane" saying if she gave her real name, her job might be jeopardized by the hatred and violence of homosexual groups, objecting to cancel culture and talking about free speech. "People do not and will not celebrate these personal choices." ... "promoting their lifestyle is crossing the line."
- 24:30 "Mo" cites Lev. 19 "a man lyin' with another man is abdominal", mentions that it was an issue in the United Church as well. And quotes Pierre Trudeau, "what goes on in the bedroom..."
- 27:21 Caller points out that the CBSC is mostly women and possibly unbalanced.
- 29:37 "Barry" points out that Dr Laura is gaybashing, points out CitadelHill gaybashing, "you are what you are."
- The 2000-05-11 ChronicleHerald article about it is on file here. DouglasFevens writes: After WayvesMagazine published my "anonymous" piece on Dr. Laura Ian contacted me to see if I wanted to work together on this.
- Ian talks to CBC radio about gay marriage and being denied an RRSP with his partner.
Ian was also bookeeper for WayvesMagazine for many years, ending at the end of 2006.
