Tunes by the Tracks Presents: The WomenNextDoor
The Women Next Door is a small, Halifax-based, queer affinity group of women-identified and non-binary folk who identify as feminists.
"Established in 1992 as a lesbian-feminist, non-auditioned, a cappella choir, we believed that song and harmony could deliver a powerful message for social change. Historically, our membership identified as lesbian. However, as time passed, identities evolved and the group has expanded to include other members of our queer family.
Within the group, we value the contribution of all members and we share musical and administrative leadership in an organic way. For thirty plus years, we have shared our voices at events that are politically important and meaningful to us. We have also participated in Unison festivals every 4 years since 1998. These festivals gather together queer choruses from across Canada. In May 2023, we had the privilege of co-hosting the Unison festival in Halifax, welcoming over 600 delegates, including 16 2SLGBTQIA+ choirs. The next Unison festival will be in Vancouver in May 2026.
We sing to challenge the system - songs about social justice (i.e., homophobia, transphobia, and misogyny; songs in peace and solidarity with other groups who struggle to be heard; and songs that celebrate Queer lives, Trans lives, and Women’s lives). We come together to have fun, to sing songs that make us feel good about ourselves, songs about living and loving, and songs that make us and others laugh, think, cry, and shout in agreement."
